Let’s hit the bottle of bleach hard and turn our locks of hair into that beautiful shade of all shades – the ethereal platinum blonde.

Of course you can do this at home with powdered bleach but to be safe I recommend seeing your stylist. If you just have to take matters into your own hands and do it yourself at home then here are some suggestions to achieve that perfect color:

  1. Use a 20% developer over two or three different sessions. 30% and 40% developer will lift the color more rapidly but will also do much more damage to your hair.
  2. Do not bleach your hair more than once a day. If you try to take your hair from dark to pale blonde in one day you will totally fry it. It is best to keep it to once a week or leave it even longer between sessions (if you can bare it) as your hair needs time to recover. This is the hardest part because depending on how dark your hair is you will go through various color stages and not many of them are very nice. Bright orange or fluro yellow hair anyone??
  3. Make sure you add deep conditioning treatments to your hair regularly to add protein back into your hair. Also use a leave in protein conditioner. Basically the more protein you can add back, the better your hair will feel. After beating your hair up with bleach it is now time to be very very nice to it.
  4. Get rid of brassiness by using a toner. The toner will be purple based to counteract the yellow color. For platinum hair use a silver toner. I think that toner brands are a highly personal thing. Everyone has their own which they love – play around until you find the one that suits you best.
  5. Use a purple based shampoo designed for maintaining blonde hair about once a week. Keep heat based styling appliances like your straightener and blow dryer to a minimum (not that possible in the real world, I know) and always apply a heat protecting product before hand.

Bleaching on a budget

Platinum blonde hair needs to be maintained regularly, so this can get expensive. But don’t fret – once you learn how to do it (using the tips above) you can find all the ingredients you need online.

You’ve definitely found some of the most fabulous blonde celebrities that I can think of. I’ve been a platinum blonde myself for quite a few years. I think blondes are sexier and have more fun. How about you?

  2. Gigi says:

I definitely agree blondes do have more fun!
I was blonde as a kid and then through puberty it got dark like most people. Now I dye it platinum blonde and feel very sexy.

  3. Nathalie says:

I def agree! We blondes DO have more fun 😉 I have a question though. I’m already blonde, just it’s on the yellowish side with some platinum strands here and there. What do you suppose I do to get it all platinum? Do I bleach it and then put a dye in it? Or a toner?

  4. Strand test says:

Please make sure you do a strand test first before you go the full hog and bleach your entire hair, that way you can keep track of the amount of time you need to leave thebleach on for.

  5. Definitely love the Kate Moss blonde, it has to be my favourite.

    Hi Elvia,
Yes I feel your pain! But actually it’s not bad if you get your dye online instead of from a salon.
Check out the links above in the post for places to get the dye cheap.
    Thanks for your comment,

Hey man, I was just searching through your web site and wanted to add the RSS feed, however it’s not working with my webbrowser (I’m using Google Chrome) any trick to get around that?

  16. Amelia says:

I would love to dye my hair platinum blonde. Right now I have light blonde with patches of platinum blonde on the top and dark brown on the bottom half. I have natural black hair. My roots are starting to come in and it’s getting really expensive to get it redone, sometimes it doesn’t even come out right. I’m thinking about trying it out by myself. What do you think? Where do I get the products mentioned above?
I couldn’t find the post for places to get the dye cheap.

Garnier 100% color bleach blonding. Only sold at walgreens and rite aid or online. there is a guy with short blonde hair on the box. I leave it on for about 80 minutes. it’s very gentle, and you need to keep it on a long time to lift all the color. This gives me better results than any salon, which would charge me 150+ for one root touch up and be brassy a week later. the color is Delicious and stays fresh a long time, but will get slightly dingy-blonde near the root area after a few weeks, so a toner may be needed. I have yet to find the perfect toner. Ive used clairol’s ultra platinum creme toner and it made my hair slightly gray-yuck. I hear Wella’s white lady is great. But anyway. I am thrilled with my white blonde hair using just this bleach alone..

  18. Melanie says:

What is your natural hair color?

  19. Yola says:

how do u know which colour level to bleach for the funky colours? i tried doing blue it didnt work and had a the blonde turn a dirty green

  20. Stacy says:

I use Loreal Feria Bleach Blonding with the platinum blonde short hair girl on the box. I have been using it for years and have naturally med to dark brunette hair. It works great. It has 2 powder packets to mix up and the first time I used it I put it all on and kept it on about 45-55 min. I do root touch ups every six weeks and keep it on about 40-50 min. The first time I lifted it…it was chicken yellow..You have to wait that out. But second time I lifted the roots full time and the remaining hair just another 20 or so and that platinumed it out. It is perfect now.

I want bleached blonde hair but im just afraid how my fair will play out.. i need advice

  22. kelsey says:

    fair skin*

  23. Erika says:

I followed the advice of Stacy (in the posts)using Feria Bleach Blonding and had different results than her. The first time it turned yellow, the second time even MORE yellow. Now, I am trying to figure out if I can put a pale ash blonde or something over to cover the yellow. I was wanting Gwen Stefani white blonde not Easter Peep yellow! Any suggestions?

  24. Erika says:

Update: I went to Sallys Beauty Supply and they had me get toner (Wella’s Ivory Lady)and 20 Developer. I left it on the full 30 minutes. The result is pale blonde, with a little grey on the ends (which I went ahead and cut off). It’s not “Gwen-white” but at least I can go out in public without a hat!

  25. Makala Fine says:

I want my hair as blonde as christina aguilera:D

  26. Sabribna says:

Just a question. How long does the bleaching process take? Like to go from dark brown to red? I’ve been bleaching my hair with hydrogen peroxide this past week and so far it’s only lightened a few shades.

  27. Sabribna says:

Also I’ve been adding the peroxide to my shampoo and leaving it on for about 30 mins to an hour. Would I have to continue bleaching until I achieve my desired color?

  28. kay says:

Platinum almost always looks cheap. Cmon ladies some of you are like old as hell and should know this. Go with a honey blonde and make it look nautral.

  29. Kristin says:

i’m going to bleach my hair so that i can dye it a light blonde colour,my current hair colour is red/brown.
Can anybody help me with what products i need?(UK)
and does anyone have any idea’s on how my hair will turn out the first time i bleach it?
